Hulu premieres a groundbreaking children’s tale with an out hero.

The Bravest Knight Who Ever Lived, the charming story of Cedric the pumpkin farmer — who shows courage, smarts and kindness as he grows to be a knight — may very well be the first children’s book to feature a hero who just happens to be gay.

Creating the tale was an act of bravery itself for writer Daniel Errico – who just happens to be straight.
The author of more than 100 children’s e-books, many of which are available on his website (FreeChildrenStories.com), Errico is widely known for his Barnes and Noble best-sellers The Journey of the Noble Gnarble and The Journey of the Marmabill.
So why would a straight, successful children’s author take on the risky challenge of creating a gay hero?
“I’m close friends with a gay couple, and when it comes to children’s literature, it was clear to me that they were being left out of the conversation,” Errico says. “There are some great children’s books about non-traditional families and gender non-conformity, but the biggest omission is gay heroes who kids can look up to and relate to.”
Errico faced resistance as soon as he began to develop the tale. “People who were close to me were concerned it might end my career,” he says. “They didn’t understand why I, as a straight man, would want to do it. But for me it’s a human rights issue. I can choose to be a part of this or not, which makes me even more determined to do it.”
The Bravest Knight Who Ever Lived was first published as an e-book, with sweetly droll illustrations by Danish artist Ida M. Schouw Andreasen. Having studied traditional fairy tales, Errico tells the story in charmingly witty verse that would make Oscar Wilde proud.
“I got amazing feedback from people who said they wish they’d had a book like this when they were growing up,” the author adds. But not all of the feedback was positive.
“There were conservative sites that said I was trying to brainwash kids and promote a gay agenda,” he says. “It was the first time in my career that people said, ‘I wouldn’t show this to my kids,’ even people who I considered liberal and gay allies. It changes for them when kids are involved. At the heart of it, some people are not fully convinced that their children’s sexuality cannot be influenced.”
Errico self-funded an animated eight-minute version of the story, which Andreasen then created. “I got unbelievably excited when Hulu decided to pick it up,” he says.
“We definitely recognized that The Bravest Knight is not for all audiences,” says Andrew Thomas, Hulu’s senior manager of content acquisition. “We wanted to be respectful and mindful of parents who are not ready to have a conversation with their kids about LGBT issues. But we hadn’t come across kids’ content that spoke to LGBT issues before. We’re in the business of telling great stories to kids, and this is such an adorable, sweet story. I feel very privileged that our whole team and our management is behind it.”
Hulu premiered The Bravest Knight Who Ever Lived on May 28, to kick off the site’s June Pride month initiative. And although it runs a mere eight minutes long, it is indeed a tale of which everyone can be proud.

Who wants a surprise lap dance from Channing Tatum?

Who wants a surprise lap dance from Channing Tatum?

Yes please

Channing Tatum disguised himself as a marketing executive so he could talk to fans about Magic Mike and what they enjoyed about the movie.

There is genuinely a moment when a disguised Channing asks a women “Who is the best actor out of all of them” and she replies “Matthew Mcconaughey”.
But the best question has to be: “Which part of the movie would you like to see in 3D?” which got the reply, “The part where there is pelvic thrusting”…
Fast forward to the moment a true 3D experience takes place and that unassuming office worker starts breaking out some moves.
Check it out here:

Magic Mike XXL is out in U.S cinemas on 1 July and UK cinemas on 3 July

What were they all doing in the middle of the dessert? How is scaring lots boys going to save the world? If they are living in the wild where do they get all that hair gel?
Well have no fear it seems the sequel to The Maze Runner – Maze Runner: The Scorch Trails – is here to answer at least some of those questions.

Zac Efron gets steamy in We Are Your Friends trailer

The perfect start to the summer…

Film hunk Zac Efron has released the trailer for his latest film We Are Your Friends.

His upcoming movie features him as a struggling 23-year-old electronic DJ trying to make it big on the Hollywood dance scene with dreams of becoming a major record producer.
Alongside taking his shirt off – or at least being in a tight t-shrt throughout – we aren’t really sure what else happens in the 3 minute 15 second trailer. Let’s say we were preoccupied.
The film is released in the US on 28 August before moving across to British shores later in the year.

French Twist (GAZON MAUDIT)

Gazon-Maudit-1-488x330

Entertaining French Film

Released as ‘French Twist’, (2005), is a cult comedy written and directed by Josaine Balasko, who also stars alongside Victoria Abril and Alain Chabat. In French with subtitles.
Gazon MauditIn this very modern ménage à trois, Laurent (Chabat) is a serial philanderer who assumes his dutiful wife Loli (Abril) is blissfully ignorant of his cheating. However, when a broken-down campervan brings stranger Marijo (Balasko) into their lives, Loli starts a less conventional extramarital romance of her own.

It’s a saucy, daring comedy in which sex becomes an ever-shifting game of musical chairs.

Upset the American Bible Belt

This film upset the American Bible Belt because of the suggestion that a wife could leave her husband, even a complete womanising jerk, for a woman.  Not even one eyebrow was even slightly raised in disgust in Europe.

See the film at the Cinema Museum

cinema-museum-building
If in London, on Sunday afternoon, May 31st, see the film at the remarkable Cinema Museum, near the Elephant and Castle. Tickets.
Not only do you get the film, but a selection of clips from other French comedy films in very relaxed surroundings.  You can a drink or snack – including quiche and pizza.  Really lovely venue.

The building used to be the Master’s House of the Lambeth Poor House, where Charlie Chaplin’s spent some time before he made his way to America.

LA CAGE AUX FOLLES (1979) French film

19/05/2015 By ACOMSDave Leave a Comment

cage1

One of the funniest films ever made.  The story is of a gay couple, Renato, (played by Ugo Tognazzi) and Albin, (Michel Serrault), who runs the Riveria’s most outrageous nightclub, in which Serrault is the leading drag act.
There is a complication as Renato’s son, Laurent, the result of his only straight one night stand, is bringing home his fiance and her very straight, religious parents, with their own dark secret.
cage2
Renato and Albin attempt the impossible to try and hide their decadent lifestyle to impress the parents and the whole situation descends into a complete French farce – which just gets more and more complicated and funnier and funnier.
cage4
Why the French version is so much better than the American ‘The Gold Cage’ is the acting.  The couple have genuine affection for each other and work together to try and help Lauren achieve happiness.
cage3
One of my favourite scenes where Renato tries to teach Albin to behave in a manly manner.

Good discussion of the film.
