NIGRA was established in 1975 with a primary focus on advocating for the decriminalization of gay male sex, following the precedent set by the Sexual Offences Act 1967 in England and Wales. This initiative sparked a backlash from Rev Ian Paisley MP, the then leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and the Free Presbyterian Church, who launched the “Save Ulster from Sodomy” campaign aimed at preserving the existing laws. Ultimately, the European Court of Human Rights compelled the UK government to enact the Homosexual Offences (Northern Ireland) Order 1982, which decriminalized sexual acts between men aged over 18.
Since those early days, NIGRA has evolved and now hosts a communication forum that allows various gay organizations across Northern Ireland to share ideas and information. This group convenes bi-monthly at the Belfast LGBT Centre, located at 23-31 Waring Street in the Cathedral Quarter. The centre is home to several charities, including the Rainbow Project and Cara Friend, which collectively provide counselling, support, and resources for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.
