Equal rights for gay people is not a numbers game

Equal rights for gay

Equal Rights for gays

There has been a tit-for-tat spat of letters over the last few months on the (mis)interpretation of the percentage of people identifying as LGBT.
The original complainant, Stella Wilson, started the debate (Writeback, January 28) by asking: “Why there is a campaign to continually push [gay] rights above everyone else’s” – given they “only” account for 1.6% of the population (a figure she reiterated in Writeback, April 23)?
Regardless of continuing squabbles over the figure, equality is not a numbers game. At the last census (2011), the Northern Irish population included only 0.2% black people, 0.6% nonagenarians (90-year-olds) and 7.3% long-term sick or disabled.
Racism, ageism or discrimination against the less able-bodied cannot be justified because they are minorities – and the same is true of the LGBT community.
Stella Wilson’s most-recent claim that “quite a large percentage [of 16-24-year-olds who believe they are gay] eventually realise they are not” is entirely unsubstantiated.
The gay rights campaign would vanish and Stella Wilson would never have to hear any more about it if only there was true equality in society.

Gay youth group reaches out to Arab minority in Israel

27/04/2015 By ACOMSDave Leave a Comment

‘In Jaffa, some people think being gay is a disease,’ says Arab counselor for Israel Gay Youth.

The Israel Gay Youth organization will be operating an Arab-language website as of this weekend, as part of its plan to work with gay Arab youngsters. This is the first time since the organization’s founding 13 years ago that it has approached the Arab minority.
The organization also plans to open Arabic-language forums for teenage boys and girls who need help and guidance regarding their sexual identity.
“One of our main challenges is working with gay Arab youth,” says the group’s CEO Ran Leabel. “We want to create a place that Arab youth can choose to be part of. We won’t blur their Arab identity but try to give it weight and space.”
The organization at first attempted to set up an Arab speaking group, but after recruiting guides, its leaders reached the conclusion that the ground had to be prepared first.
“From our meetings we learned that in Arab society, there isn’t a lot of discourse on the gay issue,” says Leabel. “So at this stage we’re not opening a group, but have translated our site, so that at least the information will be accessible to Arabic-speaking youth. We’re also setting up forums in which Arab-speaking guides will provide answers.”
One of the two Arab counselors who have been working with Israel Gay Youth for the past six month is Anton, who asked that his full name not be published for the sake of his parents, who know he’s gay but could face antagonism if their community knew, he says.
“I was a member of the Orthodox Scouts movement in Jaffa, and when I came out of the closet at the age of 19, they kicked me out,” says Anton, 22.
“The Arab community has fears that don’t exist in other communities, especially among teenagers who want to come out of the closet or have doubts about their sexual identity. Even in Jaffa, which is seen as more progressive, the gay issue is totally suppressed,” he says.
“Our society knows it exists but it isn’t spoken about. My family is wonderful, they took it hard when I came out, but they didn’t turn me away from home. I found it harder to deal with the social oppression in Jaffa. Everyone knows everyone else, so when someone declares himself to be gay, everyone knows about it and his person’s parents feel shame. It’s sad,” he says.
Anton says Arab gay youth have no sources of information about being gay, hence the importance of the assistance Israel Gay Youth can offer. “Until the age of 18, I thought I was the only gay person in the world,” he says. “I was completely cut off. We didn’t even have sex education at school. I went looking for a boy who had left our school, and I was told he was gay. I met him, he was in an art school and he introduced me to the community. Until 12th grade I never met a gay person or went to a gay party.”
The other counselor taking part in the project asked not to release even his first name because his family doesn’t know he’s gay. He is 32 and grew up in one of the Arab towns in the Triangle.
One of the reasons he didn’t join the organization earlier was its Zionist image. “But today I feel even more Zionist than the Jewish guides,” he says jokingly. “I don’t think there’s anything so Zionist in the organization’s activity that could be a problem for an Arab member.
“I want to help these kids, answer their questions, because I had no one,” he says. “I didn’t know what gay was and no one to talk to me about sexuality, a condom and the most basic, important things.
“I think we need a separate group for Arabs, because their mentality is different,” he continues. “Most of the families don’t live in Tel Aviv. The families in the north don’t know what gay is. In Jaffa, too, some think being gay is a disease. Our education is very different from the Jewish one. There are many in the closet and have to learn how to live like that, unlike Israelis who come out from the age of 12 or 13.”

Health Minister Jim Wells Quits!

27/04/2015 By ACOMSDave Leave a Comment

Reprinted Belfast Telegraph

BY STEVEN ALEXANDER AND NEVIN FARRELL – 27 APRIL 2015

Health Minister Jim Wells today quit his Executive post after facing massive pressure over controversial comments about same-sex relationships.

The DUP’s South Down candidate in the Westminster election said he was stepping down to care for his wife Grace, who recently suffered two strokes and went through major heart surgery.
Mr Wells has been at the centre of a political storm over his stance on same-sex relationships, after he claimed children brought up by gay parents were more likely to be abused.
Then on Saturday, he sparked further uproar after it was claimed he had criticised a lesbian couple while canvassing in Rathfriland.
As well as widespread calls to resign, Mr Wells became the target of an online hate campaign, which he said had badly affected him and his family.
He said that he and his family had been attacked in “a deeply personal, nasty and in some cases threatening way. Some of the outbursts on social media have been particularly abusive and menacing in nature”.
The pressure on Mr Wells had been increasing in recent months as he tried to juggle one of the most testing portfolios in the Stormont government – health – with the demands of looking after his wife.
Many of the health unions will be taking industrial action around the time of the May 7 election.
Early this morning, the DUP veteran told the Belfast Telegraph he had expected his wife’s health would have shown greater improvement before now.
However, he said Grace (right)will require long-term specialised care.

Health Minister Jim Wells

Health Minister Jim Wells

“As she now faces further challenges I have come to the point where I am no longer able to continue my ministerial duties and give Grace the attention she deserves,” he said.
“I have been working long hours within the department by day whilst receiving a steady flow of updates from family at the hospital and then sitting at Grace’s bedside throughout the night.
“Even in circumstances where Grace was sufficiently recovered and discharged, she would then more than ever require substantial assistance with rehabilitation. Having been my chief supporter throughout my career my first duty will always be to look after Grace and my family. Consequently I met with Peter and requested to stand down from ministerial office.”
First Minister Peter Robinson said he respected his Health Minister’s decision and thanked him for his work around the Executive table.
“I believe he has made a great contribution and always offered positive support at an Executive level,” the DUP leader said.
“I would have wanted it to be otherwise but I respect Jim’s decision. However, he is right to put his family first and I will fully support his decision.”
Mrs Wells, who celebrated her 57th birthday in hospital with a cake and surrounded by her family, has been diagnosed with Platypnea Orthodoexia Syndrome – a condition so rare there are only 50 cases worldwide each year.
And yesterday, it was reported Mr Wells was recently diagnosed with narcolepsy, a rare disorder which can cause sufferers to fall asleep without warning. The political row started when Mr Wells linked gay relationships to child abuse at an election event in Downpatrick.
Mr Wells said a child brought up in a homosexual relationship was more likely to be abused and neglected, claiming that such marriages were less stable.

In a video clip, Mr Wells was heard to say that “the facts show you certainly don’t bring a child up in a homosexual relationship”.
The DUP minister later apologised, but his remarks caused uproar.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said “the mask has slipped”, accusing the DUP of being “truly backward-looking” in its views.
Mr Robinson said Mr Wells’ remarks were “not our view and nor will it ever be our view.”
Police confirmed they were investigating the comments. They also launched a probe after receiving three complaints about an incident involving Mr Wells and a lesbian couple on the campaign trail.
It was alleged that he had been critical about the couple’s lifestyle while out canvassing on Saturday.
It was reported that Mr Wells had twice tried to apologise, but the couple had refused to accept it.
The daughter of one of the women told the BBC: “Jim Wells was trying to get in, trying to see mum and her partner said, ‘No she’s not coming out to see you, she doesn’t want to see you’.
“He really wanted to try and get in to apologise to her, but she didn’t want it.
“He kept saying about lifestyle choices and how it was wrong, how his party didn’t believe in lifestyle choices.
“My mum’s partner actually told him she’d voted DUP all her life and he’s now lost her vote.”

NI Direct – Find a mental health organisation

26/04/2015 By ACOMSDave Leave a Comment

Reported by Marie :
Sometimes I get tired of being angry and frustrated (sigh) – the new online Mental Health Services Finder tool was launched today and the good news is that sexual orientation is on the list – the bad news is that there are no LGBT organisations mentioned under this heading (more sighs). 3 community based counselling providers plus the Samaritans are listed under the sexual orientation heading.
I tried also to access LGBT services under the search for an organisation and drew a blank (even more sighs).
Check for yourself and if, like me, you can’t find the services our community provides please mention it to any canvassers who come to your door; but also write to NI Direct.
As Editor I have sent the following message from the NI Direct site:

Editor of NIGRA News:

It has been reported to us that the new Online Mental Health Services Finders tool does not refer to any LGBT organisations under the heading sexual orientation.

Would you please advise why this has occurred?

Regards

D Terry McFarlane – Editor

Cher knows her gay fan base exceptionally well.

‘Some friends made me a present for Take it Like a Man,’ the icon wrote on Twitter along with a link to a YouTube video.
The video, titled Take it Like a Man 7th Heaven Remix, features an endless array of perfectly buff and handsome dudes wearing very little doing things like washing a car with each other’s bodies and frolicking on a beach.
Take it Like a Man is a song from Cher’s album Closer to the Truth, her first album of new material in more than a decade.
It has already spawned the hit singles Woman’s World and I Hope You Like It and climbed as high as number three on the Billboard sales chart.

Gay teen asked to prom by straight best friend: ‘You’re my brother, so be my date?’

A devoted friend has proven his staying power after asking his gay best mate to prom – despite being straight himself.

known as Jacob, created a giant banner to ask his dear pal, known as Anthony, to the coming of age ceremony.

The friends embrace after Anthony accepts ‘You’re hella gay, I’m hella str8, but you’re like my brother, so be my d8?’ Jacob wrote on the giant red banner, which he surprised his pal with in the school corridor.
Sharing his story with the world, Anthony wrote: ‘Guess who got asked to prom! BY A STRAIGHT GUY (Army pants). he’s my best friend, and a real man given the fact he has the guts to fulfill my gay student council dream of always helping out planning dances, and never getting asked.’

How it all happened (via Imgur)

‘I couldn’t ask for a better person in my life.’
‘Thank you Jacob can’t wait for May 2nd!’
A picture was also shared on social media of the pair embracing, a massive smile on Anthony’s face.
How unbelievably sweet is this? Would you do this for a friend?

A classic example of an Art Frahm damsel in panty distress

First of all, it shouldn’t matter that Paul Richmond is adorable. And it doesn’t, but we needed to get that off our chest. (Go see his YouTube page.)
Richmond’s creative output is widely varied, but in this portfolio we concentrate on these happy bits of Americana. The world news has not been so great lately, and knowing that we are entering another election cycle makes us want to drown puppies. But seeing these lighthearted takeoffs on the classic calendar pinups of Art Frahm makes everything seem alright again. And isn’t that a great reason for art? To uplift the spirits?
Paul Richmond is an internationally recognized visual artist and activist whose paintings draw inspiration from his own experiences as a young gay man. He graduated from Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio in 2002 and came out of the closet shortly thereafter. Since then, his artwork has become a vehicle for exploring and understanding his own journey as well as developing a dialogue with other LGBTQ people.
His career has included exhibitions in galleries throughout the United States as well as publication in numerous art journals and anthologies. He has created over 250 novel cover illustrations. He teaches community art classes for Stonewall Columbus. He has volunteered with the Kaleidoscope Youth Center, encouraging LGBTQ teens to use art as a means of self-exploration and expression. He is a cofounder of the You Will Rise Project, an organization that empowers those who have experienced bullying to speak out creatively through the language, visual, and performing arts..
Paul shares his life with husband, Dennis Niekro. They were married in a group ceremony with 24 other same-sex couples in front of the U.S. Supreme Court building in June 2013. Together, they are committed to using their artistic talents to raise equality awareness.

Music: Ricky Martin

26/04/2015 By ACOMSDave Leave a Comment

Ricky Martin isn’t Livin La Vida Loca anymore

And he’s recruited Pitbull for his recent track

He’s known for having his top off, sexy Spanish lyrics and making mouths drool all across the world.

But, Ricky Martin is back after nearly a year of new music – and he’s only gone and got Pitbull involved!
The sunglasses-clad rapper – who’s been featured by basically every artist at some stage – and Ricky have brought us Mr Put It Down, a disco-flavored jam track from Martin’s upcoming album.
The best news, it’s in English. Even though both artists speak fluent Spanish – and Ricky is known for recording albums in only Spanish – it means we get to sing-a-long without doing that weird beatboxing thing we normally have to do when Pitbull raps.
We’ve only got the lyric video for you for now, but after having this on repeat all morning we can’t wait for the official video.
Luckily, we do get a glimpse of the Puerto Rican heartthrob near the end, which will last us long enough until the actual video.
Check it out below…

Mr Put It Down is available to download on iTunes now. Ricky’s fourth English-language album and eleventh overall will be released on 24 May.
