Photographs – A Gay Movie Review

02/06/2023 By ACOMSDave Leave a Comment

PhotographsPhotographs is a short gay romance movie about Greyson who has just broken up with his girlfriend, Maddie, and Robbie a college-aged boy who can help him get the photographs he needs for a dating app.

Robbie is gay, but Greyson doesn’t seem to know what he wants or who at the start of the movie.  Every time they meet for a photograph session there seems to be an invisible barrier, and when Robbie returns home to download the pictures, at first he seems to want to spend more time with Greyson and he then pretends the photographs or manipulate them so that there has to be more sessions.

After a call from Maddie which seems to throw Greyson into a loop, preceded by a call between him and Robbie in which he has Robbie to come over so that he can view the photos of himself.  When they meet both are slightly awkward with each other, and both end up parting without understanding why.

Greyson quickly comes to understand that he does like Greyson and rives off to catch him up and here I ask you to watch the movie and tell me your thoughts about the ending.

Photographs is a movie produced and filmed by Dmitri Mikhnev and Ly Tran of GoodGaff Productions from Los Angeles

Out! – short gay movie 2020 – movie review

14/07/2021 By ACOMSDave Leave a Comment

Out!

Title:  Out!

Date:   August 3, 2020

Length:   9.59mins

Genre:   Gay

Director:   Ben Hull

Actors:   Pauline McLynn and Paul Sloss

Out! - 3 - Pauline McLynn Out!-1 - Paul Sloss

Out! Takes place at the dinner table between the Mother and the son, with a noticeable gap at the table. It revolves around what was said, what wasn’t said and then finally with the son coming out.  It also puts straight into the open homophobia, or perceived homophobia, and how a mother always knows.

It covers family relationships, the fear of rejection and the desire for acceptance.

Funny line ‘I didn’t like curry until I tried it’

For me what makes the movie interesting is the interaction between the mother and son, it almost is a re-enactment of the typical Irish matriarchial mother.

‘Anyone that you want to bring here to this house is welcome, so long as they respect you and treat you well’

the film ends with a laugh (if not a downright snigger) – you will enjoy this movie, and I would rate it 4.5 out of 5.

“Silver Road” – Gay Short Film 2006 – Movie Review

01/03/2021 By ACOMSDave Leave a Comment

Silver RoadShort films do not get the press they deserve. Silver Road is about two young men, best friends through childhood, and how their road splits and their lives. Of how they struggle with saying goodbye to each other, and of underlying feelings.

The story takes place in an isolated farming community in Ontario, Canada where Mark (Jonathan Keltz) Silver Road - Jonathan Keltz Picture

feels his life is and Danny (Andrew Hachey) who is leaving for university in the city of Toronto, Ontario.

The two actors are Jonathan Keltz and Andrew Hachey. It is 17 years since this film was produced, and it is interesting that in 2008 it was on the Iris Prize Shortlist, and also that Jonathan Keltz career has developed with roles in the TV series Entourage and Being, and also as Hownland Reed in Game of Thrones

The story is short, but the two actors are excellent in what is essentially a breaking up movie about unrequited love – Danny is in love with Mark and decides to let him know. It is not a new phenomenon, the difference here is the gay context and how Mark accepts or doesn’t Danny’s love.

As with all life, you can only be true to yourself; and Danny is. Mark is surprised, and initially doesn’t know how to respond. But by the final scenes, their relationship seems to back to almost normal!

In today’s world of social media contacts and mobile phones, the story situation would seem dated, particularly with the exposure of LGBTQ+ in the media, and with people coming out on YouTube or TikTok; however, it is relevant as there are still communities like the one in which this movie is set. You still have various sects which can label LGBTQ+ kids as abominations and want to get them treated.

This movie should be watched by everyone even if only to get people talking. I can see it being of great use as a starting point in a school or college class where you can discuss the storyline, the characters, real or not, is it relevant in today’s world…

I would rate this film now as a 7.0, it is not earth-shattering, but it is well crafted and anyone can
watch it.

NIghtfall (Anochecer) 2012

21/12/2015 By ACOMSDave Leave a Comment

Yet again I have found a short movie which hasn’t see much light of day, and deserves a better airing.  Anochecer (or Nightfall) is a beautiful written and acted tale about the start of a love affair.  Of the journey yet to come, and of a tale in which more is left to our imagination than is explicitly told.

Director: Lucas Mac Dougall
Cast: Leandro Gauto, Juan Yarcho

Kiev's oldest cinema burned down during gay film

02/11/2014 By David McFarlane Leave a Comment

Unknown man threw a smoke grenade into the audience

31 OCTOBER 2014 | BY DARREN WEE
The Zhovten cinema in Kiev burned for five hours.

The oldest cinema in the Ukranian capital went up in flames on Wednesday night during the screening of a LGBTI film after a smoke grenade was thrown into the audience.
The fire broke out at 21:41 and raged for five hours until it was put out by 22 fire department units, according to the State Emergency Service.
None of the 100 people at the screening were hurt, but the Zhovten cinema, built in 1931, was badly damaged.
‘The film had been playing for 20 minutes already when people in back rows shouted: “Smoke!”‘ festival coordinator Aleksey Chaschin said.
Filmgoer Yevhen Zelman wrote on Facebook that an unknown man tossed an ‘incendiary smoke grenade’ into the audience.
He said people started to run but the emergency exits were locked and the cashiers and security guards did not know how to use the fire extinguishers.
Alexei Blyuminov wrote on Facebook that the reason for the arson attack was obvious considering an LGBTI film was showing.
‘In a country, where street Nazis have become police officers, no one will investigate a crime, committed by the far-right. One hand washes the other,’ he said.
The French film Les Nuits d’été (Summer Nights) was showing as part of an LGBTI program at the Molodist youth film festival.
Other said the attack was caused by an ongoing legal dispute between the cinema and the building owners, who want to evict them.
Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko promised the cinema would be rebuilt.
‘The arson of the premise, which became a subject of debate and legal battles in recent years, can’t be ruled out. We won’t allow Zhovten, which became a symbol of intellectual cinema among the moviegoers in the capital, to be taken away from us,’ he said.
Kiev Pride was cancelled in July for fear of attacks.
