It may cost too much to save gay men from anal cancer

UK health bosses: It may cost too much to save gay men from anal cancer

Decision to vaccinate gay and bi men to protect them delayed

Reprinted GayStar News – 13 MARCH 2015 | BY TRIS REID-SMITH
Human Papillomavirus: Causes warts, anal, oral, penile and cervical cancers but can be prevented by immunisation.

A decision to start a vaccination program to stop gay and bi men getting anal cancer has been delayed by UK health officials.
The reason? Because it may not be ‘cost effective’.
All girls aged 12 to 13 already get the vaccines which stop them getting the human papillomavirus (HPV) and developing genital warts and cervical cancer.
The idea was to extend that to all boys of the same age. But that decision has been put off until 2017.
In the mean time, the UK Committee on Vaccination and Immunization was expected to at least approve giving the life-saving jabs to men who have sex with men.
Clinicians say the rates of HPV and the cancers it causes in gay and bi men are the same as the rates in women before they started the nationwide vaccination program.
That, campaigners argue, makes this a clear gay health inequality.
But minutes released by the committee today say that feedback that more people should be vaccinated would push up the price of the jabs.
They even say it might be cheaper to let gay men get anal cancer and then treat it, rather than prevent it. They say fewer would die than they previously thought.
‘More recently published data on chemotherapy for anal cancer… showed improved survival,’ the minutes argue.
Their decision to gather more data on the vaccination’s cost-effectiveness pushes an eventual decision to the tail end of 2015 – after the General Election.
Even then, there is no guarantee they will agree to the vaccinations.
Dr Shaun Griffin, director of external affairs at sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust, said: ‘We are hugely disappointed that a much needed decision to introduce HPV vaccination for gay and bisexual men has once again been pulled further from our grasp.
‘Each delay leaves this group unprotected against HPV-related cancers. These inequalities urgently need to be addressed.
‘We believe that the HPV vaccine should be extended to all boys irrespective of their sexuality.
‘Until that happens, if the government is serious about improving the health of gay and bisexual men, a program targeted at them specifically would be a good place to start, given their increased risk.’
UK figures from 2011 show 47,500 men get genital warts each year, and over 2,000 contract anal, oral or penile cancers as a result.

Here’s a way for gay men to help save lives, even if you’re banned from giving blood

15/03/2015 By David McFarlane Leave a Comment

Reprinted from Pink News – 13th March 2015, 3:57 PM Nick Duffy

Young gay men who remain banned from giving blood have been urged to sign up to the bone marrow register instead.

In England, Scotland and Wales at present, men who have sex with men (MSM) are banned from giving blood from 12 months from last sexual activity. In Northern Ireland, men who have sex with men are permanently banned from giving blood.
However, the regulations do not mean there is no way for MSM to make a difference – as they are still able to register to donate stem cells and bone marrow.
Bone marrow donor Stuart Brooks has urged more gay men to sign upStuart Brooks, a 25 year old trainee lawyer from London, has opened up about his experience of donating bone marrow – and urged other gay men to do so.
He said: “While at university I found out that donating blood simply wasn’t open to gay men who were sexually active.
“But when [bone marrow charity] Anthony Nolan visited my university they quickly established that my sexuality would not bar me from saving a life – it was like a breath of fresh air.”
Seven years after joining the register, he was found to be a match for someone in need of a transplant – and opted to go ahead with the procedure.
He continued: “Suddenly I was confronted with the fact that there was another person out there who had a specific need for my stem cells. Only then did it become real – it’s not just this abstract thing.
“I decided to donate in the less common method – a short surgical procedure – because it was best for my specific match.
“The vast majority of people donate stem cells through their blood now, instead of giving actual bone marrow like I did.
“But despite the myths, the procedure was painless – in fact, the most discomfort I felt was removing the medical tape from my arms!”
He added: “After I donated my bone marrow, word spread among my friends, and I was stunned by the response from my peers. I found that lots of gay men assumed they couldn’t donate due to their sexuality.
“This is wrong and since young men make the best donors, it felt like a terrible waste.
“I felt compelled to spread the message; we need more young gay role models to sign up to the Anthony Nolan register and save lives.
“If the gay community can get behind this, we can have a really positive impact and drastically increase the number of people who are cured of blood cancer.
“Many gay men strive to provide role models for our community, so wouldn’t it be awesome if we could become known as a group of selfless superheroes that has vitally improved the prospects of those living with blood cancer?”
Ann O’Leary of Anthony Nolan said: “Sadly many gay men assume they can’t donate stem cells but this just isn’t the case.
“We urgently need more young men to join our register, as they are most likely to be asked to donate yet make up just 15% of the register.
“The more young men like Stuart sign up, the more lives we can save. It’s so easy to sign up to the register, all you have to do is fill out a simple form and spit in a tube.
“If you are a match for someone donating isn’t painful, 90% of the time it’s just like an extended blood donation.”
You can join the bone marrow register online here.
The government ruled out relaxing the rules on MSM blood donation last year – though Tory MP Michael Fabricant submitted a backbench bill calling for a change.
Gay men in Canada were allowed to give blood for one day last year – with the blood used for research purposes instead of transfusions.

RCN launches toolkit to help prevent suicide in LGBT youth

Reprinted from Royal College of NursingPublished: 13 March 2015

The RCN, in collaboration with Public Health England (PHE), has launched a toolkit to guide nurses and other health professionals in the prevention of suicide in lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-gender (LGBT) young people.
LGBT youth are at a higher risk of suicide than their heterosexual peers due to the impact and fear of stigma, discrimination and rejection from society.

Reducing the risk of suicide

The toolkit aims to equip nurses with the knowledge and skills to provide effective support to LGBT young people and help reduce the risk of suicide.
The National Aids Trust recently reported that 99% of LGBT teenagers had received abuse from school mates due to their sexual orientation, whilst a 2014 study by METRO Centre found that 44% of LGB youth had thought of suicide and half had experience of self-harm.

Nurses are uniquely placed

Nurses are uniquely placed to support LGBT young people who have not accessed mental health services.
The toolkit provides insight into the experiences of LGBT young people, and offers practical advice and resources on key areas including:
• Risk factors
• Confidentiality and consent
• Effective communication
Dr Peter Carter, Chief Executive & General Secretary of the RCN, said:
“Suicide in any situation is a tragedy and nurses have a duty to identify risk factors and prevent suicide wherever possible.
“The RCN is dedicated to addressing the problems facing lesbian, gay and bisexual people. Our ambition for this toolkit is to help nurses deliver the best possible care to LBG young people experiencing mental health issues, in order to help save lives across the UK.

An important and often overlooked issue

Dr Carter added: “This toolkit should help to highlight an important and often overlooked issue, and should ultimately be integrated into the National Suicide Prevention Strategy to ensure LGB young people receive the support they deserve.”
The toolkit is available to download from the Gov.uk website

After two Erskine College athletes come out as gay, school bans homosexuality

Rural South Carolina college issues statement to be added to official manual

26 FEBRUARY 2015 | BY GREG HERNANDEZ
Erskine College graduation 2007

It’s officially not okay to be gay at Erskine College in South Carolina.
Two male volleyball players came out publicly last year and although they have been accepted by teammates, the school has taken the step of issuing  a new official statement of human sexuality that is against homosexuality.
It states in part: ‘As a Christian academic community, and in light of our institutional mission, members of the Erskine community are expected to follow the teachings of scripture concerning matters of human sexuality and institutional decisions will be made in light of this position.’
It also states: ‘Sexual relations outside of marriage or between persons of the same sex are spoken of in scripture as sin and contrary to the will of the Creator.’
Juan Varona, one of the two out volleyball players, expressed his disappointment saying the ‘school took several steps back instead of progressing towards a future where everyone can be treated as an equal, in the school taking this step.’
‘The release of this statement makes me disappointed because I have never received anything but kind treatment from everyone at this school, and my sexual orientation is no secret. So it took me by surprise,’ he told Outsports which featured his story last year.
‘… When I saw the mention of sexual orientation being an issue, it just made me sad and worried for other gay people who might be struggling with confidence to come out.

Love in black and white: Farm’s pair of gay Humboldt penguins celebrate their first anniversary together

  • Peso and Squaddle coupled up after shunning females looking to mate
  • A year on, two-year-old Humboltd penguins only have eyes for each other
  • Staff gave couple a false egg during breeding season but they threw it out

These gay penguins have been together for a year, but are still as loved-up as ever.

Peso and Squaddle, two-year-old Humboldt penguins living at Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo in Pembrokeshire, coupled up a year ago after shunning females looking to mate.

While their fellow penguins prepare for breeding season, the pair only have eyes for each other as they get ready to celebrate their first anniversary this month.

Staff at Folly Farm say the young lovers have no interest in procreating.

They had been given a false egg, so that they wouldn’t feel left out during breeding season – but they threw it out of their love nest.

Penguin keeper Catrin Thomas said: ‘We’re approaching breeding season and at around two years old, penguins become sexually mature, so we thought this year they may show some interest but they haven’t as yet.

‘All the other penguins are busy making nests at the top of the penguin beach, scrambling around hurriedly and gathering twigs, but Peso and Squaddle stay by the pool preening each other.’

She added: ‘Peso and Squaddle don’t seem to be interested in anything else but each other, and certainly not procreating.

‘They’re just enjoying each other’s company.’

Tim Morphew, Folly Farm’s zoo manager, said: ‘We wanted to mark the occasion and the year anniversary of Peso and Squaddle getting together.

‘Everybody who comes to Folly Farm says theirs is a really sweet love story and we wanted to celebrate the fact they were still going strong a year on.’

Humboltd penguins, who are monogamous and mate for life, can take a partner aged between two and eight-years-old.

CAN PENGUINS BE GAY? FROM THE FAMOUS SAME-SEX COUPLE TO THE BEST PARENTS EVER

Penguins have been observed engaging in homosexual behaviour from as early as 1911.

George Murray Levick documented the sexual behaviour of Adélie penguins in Antarctica, but his notes were considered too indecent to publish at the time. They were rediscovered and published in the journal Polar Record a century later in 2012.

More recently, a pair of chinstrap penguins called Roy and Silo became a famous ‘gay penguin’ couple after the New York Times published an article about them in 2004.

The penguins, who live in New York’s Central Park Zoo, were noticed performing mating rituals in 1998, by staff – although they were never seen to perform sex acts.

They were then given an egg to hatch and raise as their own – a practice copied by zoos across the world. Their chick, named Tango, grew up to form a same sex relationship with another female penguin.

Their story was the basis for a controversial children’s book in 2005 called ‘And Tango Makes Three’. But the couple later split, and Silo paired with a female penguin.

Last year, a pair of Humboldt penguins, called Jumbs and Kermit, from Wingham Wildlife Park in Kent, adopted the chick of a female called Isobel who had to abandon her egg to find food.

Staff at Wingham Wildlife Park said they were the two ‘best penguin parents’ the zoo has ever had.

But a French study in 2010 said penguins only have gay ‘flings’ because they are lonely, but ultimately end up in a heterosexual couple.

Gay, pro-choice loyalist Julie-Anne Corr Johnston breaks mould of Ulster politics

Recently married councillor says her sexuality was not an issue for Belfast voters

She is the first openly lesbian politician in Northern Ireland, a pro-choice feminist and the new face of working-class Ulster loyalism at Belfast City Hall.
Julie-Anne Corr Johnston is a glaring contrast to the old stereotypes about Northern Ireland loyalists. But the 27-year-old still belongs to a political party that evolved out of the Ulster Volunteer Force and despite her social radicalism maintains she is vehemently pro-union.
Just back from her eastern European honeymoon after marrying Kerry Johnston, the Progressive Unionist party councillor admits she made history when elected to City Hall in May. Representing working-class loyalists in Oldpark, one of the most deprived wards in Northern Ireland, Corr Johnston says local people have been fully supportive of her marriage. “There were a lot of great comments across social media and loads of emails of support. But the electorate were fully aware of my sexuality prior to the election.”
Reflecting on her election, Corr Johnston says: “To be totally honest when I got elected I didn’t think ‘Oh I’m the first LGBT to be elected!’ … What really got me excited was that I’m a young, progressive loyalist who happens to be a woman in politics, which is something we rarely see here and that is what I am most proud of.”
Some fellow unionists such as the Democratic Unionist party oppose equal rights for gay people, but Corr Johnston says she prefers to be “diplomatic” towards those politicians whom others in the local LGBT community accuse of blatant homophobia. “Many heads, many minds is my approach. We don’t have to think alike and nor do we. The Progressive Unionist party has an equality policy and inclusivity in practice. And that means inclusivity for Peter and Paul in society rather than robbing one to pay the other. The DUP is a political party with a religious ethos and there is room for that in society.”
Asked if the DUP were as diplomatic with her as she is with them, she replies: “No, no problems with them, in fact we get on extremely well and when we need to work together we do.”
The DUP is currently trying to force a freedom of conscience bill through the Northern Ireland assembly, which effectively would allow born-again evangelical Christians to opt out of equality laws. It was prompted by the Equality Commission in the region finding a local bakery chain, Ashers, guilty of anti-gay discrimination for refusing to make a gay-themed cake for an LGBT couple.
Corr Johnston says she would vote against any motion on the council that would back the DUP’s campaign. “Yes I would be opposed, that would be my personal viewpoint. The freedom of conscience bill only gives way for further discrimination.”
While socially liberal and diametrically opposed to the DUP’s anti-abortion, anti-gay rights agenda, Corr Johnston insists she is like those in other unionist parties “rock solidly pro-union”. She says: “The United Kingdom? You don’t get a more liberal, progressive democracy in this world. And I am confident of Northern Ireland’s position within the UK. Our best interests are served being inside that union.”
The PUP councillor says she became politicised by taking part in the grassroots loyalist protests against Belfast city council’s decision two years ago to reduce the number of days it flies the union flag. She also fully supports the right of North Belfast Orangemen to complete a controversial parade banned since July 2013 from passing the republican Ardoyne district close to where she grew up. “I was a flag protester at the time and that is what brought me to politics and political activism.”
Corr Johnston says another main reason why she chose to join the PUP was its pro-choice stance on abortion. “I support the Marie Stopes clinic and women’s right to access services in it in Belfast. The party is pro-choice, that is why I joined.”
The Ashers bakery controversy, the freedom of conscience bill and the fact that Northern Ireland remains the only part of the UK where Corr Johnston’s marriage is not on a fully equal footing suggest the region is still a hotbed of homophobia. But she believes the people are ahead of most of their politicians. She welcomes the fact the Republic of Ireland is holding a referendum in the spring to make gay marriage equal in law. “It is potentially what we might have to do here in Northern Ireland, and let the people speak.
“When I was in Egypt recently with Kerry we both had to hide our sexuality whereas in Northern Ireland we have come a long way with LGBT issues. Some in the media would have you believe we are behind the times but think of the thousands of citizens who turn out in this city every year to cheer on the Gay Pride marchers. It’s evidence that people out there are more tolerant.”

German court fines relatives for abducting gay Muslim

Reprinted from :  ReutersBy By Madeline Chambers | Reuters – 18 hours agoBy

The men were finedBERLIN (Reuters) – A German court fined the father and two uncles of an 18-year-old Muslim citizen for depriving him of his personal freedom when he was a minor in an attempt, the victim says, to force him into marriage with a woman despite his homosexuality.
In a case highlighting the problems Germany faces in integrating its four-million-strong Muslim community, Nasser El-Ahmad, who has a Lebanese background, has also told German media that his family tortured him for being gay.
Found in a car at the Romanian-Bulgarian border two days after he went missing in December 2012, prompting an Interpol alert, El-Ahmad says he was kidnapped by his family in order to arrange his marriage to a Lebanese girl.
After a five-minute hearing on Thursday, the judge handed the three accused men, who were not present, fines of 1,350 euros (960 pounds) each for detaining him and taking him abroad.
El-Ahmad, wearing a black shirt and trousers, black earrings and a “STOP HOMOPHOBIA” badge, said the court had done what it deemed right. “I did what I have the strength to do. At least this came to court, I’m happy about that,” he said, adding he had not expected his relatives to turn up. “I’m not someone who hides. I don’t want to suppress my sexuality.”
El-Ahmad has told German media his father vowed to slit his throat and his uncle threatened to burn him after dousing him with petrol because they could not allow him to be gay.
The court did not deal with allegations of torture or forced marriage but the abduction happened after he was put into care.
While Germany has long struggled to stop the practice of forced marriage, the case has exposed risks faced by gay men. Some estimates put the number of forced marriages in Berlin at about 450 a year, with only a few dozen affecting men.
“It was a very brave step as a homosexual .. to question a religious society that is very conservative and lives in the Middle Ages,” said film director and gay rights activist Rosa von Praunheim. “Gays and young women are in the same boat.”
The case also feeds into a debate about the role of Islam in Germany, brought to a head by the anti-immigration PEGIDA (Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the West) group which won support with warnings about being overrun by Muslims.
Although its popularity is waning, the grassroots movement put the question of Islam’s role in Germany on the political agenda and its weekly marches in Dresden were at their height when Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned them and declared: “Islam belongs to Germany”.

SENATOR COGHLAN REVEALS STRUGGLE WITH ACCEPTING SON’S SEXUALITY

FINE GAEL SENATOR EAMONN COGHLAN HAS CALLED FOR A YES VOTE IN THE UPCOMING MARRIAGE REFERENDUM AND REVEALED HIS OWN STRUGGLE IN COMING TO TERMS WITH HIS SON’S SEXUALITY.

Appearing at a Fine Gael LGBT public meeting last night, the former Olympic runner spoke about the difficulties his son Michael faced as a result of being gay.
“When I discovered my son Michael was gay I was devastated. I cried for weeks. The hopes and dreams I had for my son were shattered. I felt guilty, almost as if I was to blame for him being gay,” Coghlan told the audience in Portlaoise.
“I tried to cover up my disappointment. While I hugged him, told him I loved him, I had to come to terms that, it was not about me but about him and his life ahead.
Coghlan spoke about how meeting his son’s friends – some of whom are gay – made him open his eyes. “I got to know them and see how happy he was with his mates. Michael is a grown man now, but he suffered awful bullying in school.”

Coghlan told the audience that his son suffered from anxiety in school, and was often subject to bullying by classmates. “At the time, we didn’t know why this was happening but after he came out it became apparent that it was because he was gay.
“The abuse didn’t stop after he came out. He was subject to two particularly violent physical attacks in Dublin on account of his being gay.”

Coghlan delivered a powerful endorsement of the referendum on May 22, saying, “I was lucky enough to marry the woman of my dreams. Who are we as a nation to deny our sons and daughters the basic right of marrying the person they love?
“It is about equality, removing rejection, removing exclusion, removing the guilt, shame and fear that gay people experience. We have to think of the person, their dignity, their validation, their human freedom to love and to live life to the full.”

Gay Politics in Northern Ireland

13/03/2015 By David McFarlane Leave a Comment

The programme is called The “Gay Cake” Affair and broadcasts on BBC Radio 4 at 11am on Mon 23 March 2015.
William Crawley William Crawley explores the issues raised by the so-called ‘Gay Cake‘ row and the resulting ‘Conscience Clause‘ proposal to amend Northern Ireland’s equality legislation.
It began last year when Ashers Baking Company in Belfast refused to make a cake bearing the legend ‘Support Gay Marriage.’ The firm defended their decision, stating the message on the cake was contrary to their Christian beliefs, but the Northern Ireland Equality Commission is now supporting an anti-discrimination case against the owners of the bakery.
In response, The Christian Institute called for donations to help Ashers meet their legal costs, saying it was providing the support because of what it claimed were “the difficulties Christians face in holding to their religious beliefs in an increasingly secular society”.
At the Stormont Assembly the Democratic Unionist Party MLA, Paul Givan, proposed a draft Private Member’s Bill to introduce a ‘Conscience Clause’ that would allow the refusal of goods and services on the grounds of strongly held religious beliefs.
The ‘Gay Cake’ row has since made headlines far beyond Belfast. As the debate over the Conscience Clause intensifies and the case against Ashers goes to court, William Crawley meets the key players and asks how we might negotiate these and other similar cases elsewhere where there are competing sets of ‘rights’ at stake.  Is ‘reasonable accommodation’ possible and what does the debate reveal about a changing Northern Ireland?

NIGRA has refrained from the cake mix(sorry) until now, as we believed it was best handled by the Equality Commission, but with the push about the ‘Conscience Clause’ and its wider ramifications to our civil liberties Jeff Dudgeon has now entered the fray. Gay Politics are now up front and personal; if you don’t agree with any part of the interview then make your feelings known either by contacting the BBC or commenting on NIGRA’s Blog.
