Rupert Penry-Jones says Flint's gay romance on Black Sails was cut back

There was a storm in Black Sails fandom earlier this year when Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) was seen to have a gay romance.
But actor Rupert Penry-Jones – who played Flint’s lover Thomas Hamilton – told Digital Spy that the divisive plot was originally intended to be an even bigger part of the series.

“I knew that it would be a big deal,” he said. “Can you imagine… the lead character in a show about pirates – with a famous character like Flint, and you’re going to basically say that he’s gay – that’s kind of massive!
“I mean, the cast didn’t even know [about the twist] until they actually got that episode – it was very hush hush, but I thought it was a great idea.”
Penry-Jones suggested that his role on Black Sails was scaled back after some people were “freaked out” by the storyline.
“I don’t know what happened, but I think maybe there were some people at the top who were uncomfortable about that side of things,” he revealed. “So maybe it didn’t get put into the show as much as maybe it was originally going to be.
“I was certainly led to believe [Hamilton] was a more major character than he ended up being, so I think what happened was, they started seeing [the storyline] and what a major effect it was having and it freaked a few people out, like: ‘No no no, we can have lesbian pirates but not gay ones!'”

On the series, Hamilton was ‘disappeared’ by Flint’s rivals – but Penry-Jones played down fan speculation that his character could still return.
“I don’t think he is! I’m tied into another TV show for a few years to come now, so I can’t, unless they work some dates out. If they have ideas about me coming back, I don’t know about it.”
He went on to describe working in US television as “a lot more cutthroat” than acting on screen in the UK: “It’s weird when you do an American show – there’s no sort of pastoral care around it.
“You turn up and do what you’re being paid to do – and then when it’s done, you go home. It’s not like working for the BBC or ITV where they’re really lovely and look after you and keep you part of it.
“You’re there when you’re there, and you’re paid, and the rest of the time you might as well not exist.”
Toby Stephens recently told DS that Flint’s gay romance on Black Sails had helped to change some viewers’ minds on the topic.
“For a lot of guys, they just can’t get their head around it,” he said. “But then most of the guys that had cried out against it, by the end of [the storyline], they had come round again.”
Rupert Penry-Jones stars in Life in Squares, continuing this Monday (August 10) at 9pm on BBC Two. The first series of Black Sails continues on Tuesdays at 10pm on History.

No evidence that migrants are lying about their sexuality to get into the UK

20/08/2015 By ACOMSDave Leave a Comment

It’s ‘nonsense’

The Daily Mail is reporting that posters are appearing in Calais informing migrants that they should lie about their sexuality to gain asylum in the UK.
The paper is claiming that a ‘how-to’ guide has been glued to the entrance of the migrant camp named ‘The Jungle’ explaining in Arabic and English that : “Migrants are told to choose a ‘category’ which proves that their life is in danger in their homeland. Reasons given include ‘race and religion’ and ‘being gay in some countries’.”
Strangely the Mail has failed to provide any photographic evidence of this poster.
UK Lesbian & Gay Immigration Group, a charity dedicated to supporting, and advocating for the rights of, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people seeking asylum in the UK has responded to this story.
Paul Dillane their Executive Director said : “There is no significant evidence available that demonstrates people are lying about their sexuality in order to claim asylum let alone that they are successful in doing so. The idea that seeking asylum on those grounds is an easy option is nonsense.
“In fact, LGBT people face significant obstacles in navigating the complex and frequently unsympathetic UK asylum system. Many LGBT people who are at real risk of persecution have been wrongly refused refugee protection in the UK due to poor standards of Home Office decision-making.
“This story is a further distraction from the real issue at hand: the humanitarian needs of several thousand men, women and children, many of whom have fled war and persecution, and are living in squalor in the heart of Western Europe.”
“UKLGIG urges the government to demonstrate leadership and compassion in responding to the situation which exists in Calais and to advance the UK’s role in protecting those who seek asylum in this country and who are in need of assistance abroad.”

Bus Driver calls Belfast Pride marchers 'bum-busters'

Bus Driver calls Belfast Pride marchers ‘bum-busters’

He then defended his comments

A bus driver is being disciplined after he allegedly used homophobic slurs over an open radio channel during Belfast Pride.
The Translink bus driver is reported to have told his supervisor, on the company radio, that he couldn’t get his bus through the city’s streets because there were “too many bum-busters” in the road.
The Belfast Telegraph reports that the driver repeated the slur and then defended his comments to his supervisors, the other bus drivers who heard him on the radio and Translink passengers who were in his vehicle.
In a statement to the BBC, the bus operator apologised to its passengers and staff for the driver’s “offensive language”.
They said: “We take incidents of this nature very seriously and we expect all our staff to deal with their passengers and colleagues in a friendly, helpful and professional manner at all times.
“A full investigation has been carried out and appropriate action is being taken.”
John O’Doherty from the Rainbow Project spoke to BBC Radio Ulster’s The Stephen Nolan Show saying that this was the kind of “everyday homophobia” that “still exists within our society” and which “in many ways is tolerated”.
He went on to say: “It shouldn’t be tolerated in the workplace especially in relation to public employers but the reality is in too many places and too many parts of our society it is still acceptable.”

This certainly makes up for months of having to look at Justin Bieber’s digitally-enhanced crotch. This week, New Yorkers woke up to find Calvin Klein Jeans’ new fall campaign, which features a gay couple for the first time in the brand’s history, posted on one of the biggest billboards in the city.
The picture, lensed by Mario Sorrenti, shows models Reid Rohling and Ethan James Green entwined, visibly about to lock lips, while a suggestive text conversation appears on the corner of the frame. The image was chosen to appear on the brand’s most visible advertising space, at the corner of Houston Street and Lafayette Street, which is one of the busiest intersections in Manhattan.
Meanwhile, the campaign video of the scene, entitled “After Work Special,” also came out. As you’d expect, it’s pretty steamy:

Now we have proof that Hollywood 'ignores gay and lesbian characters'

20/08/2015 By ACOMSDave Leave a Comment

Brokeback Mountain

Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain.

Mainstream cinema remains unwilling to feature lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender characters and continues to “distort the demographic reality” of audiences, according to a new report.
Analysis of 700 films released between 2007 and 2014 found that less than one per cent of leading characters were gay.
Out of a total of 4,610 characters in the top 100 films of 2014, 10 were gay men, four were lesbian, and five were bisexual. No transgender characters featured.
Only 14 of the 100 films had one or more LGBT characters.
Virtually no lesbian, gay or bisexual characters were shown in healthy relationships, researchers noted. depictions of healthy romantic or sexual relationships were “scarce”, they said. Of 19 lesbian, gay or bisexual characters, only two were portrayed as being in a public, stable, long-term partnership and two were shown dating.
Furthermore, no lesbian, gay or bisexual characters were depicted as raising children together. “The landscape of popular cinema remains skewed and stereotypical,” the researchers said.

Gay Irish Scout drops out of leadership race after receiving threatening email

20/08/2015 By ACOMSDave Leave a Comment

The email was received on the eve of the leadership vote1
The email was received on the eve of the leadership vote

An Irish Scout leader, who is openly gay, has revealed that he dropped out of the running for Chief Scout due to a threatening email.

Kieran Gildea (58), is a long-standing member of Scouting Ireland, and was a favourite for the position of Chief Scout, but dropped out of the race after receiving an anonymous email which contained ‘insinuations and threats’ which led to his ‘immediate collapse’.

The email was received on the eve of the National Council in April, where it was expected that Mr Gildea would have been elected as Chief Scout.

Speaking to The Irish Scouter, Mr Gildea said that the email triggered repressed guilt he had felt at being gay and thew him into depression.

“The message triggered a flood of bad feelings about myself and convinced me that I was letting everyone in my life down in the most hurtful way and that the principles that I strive to live by were all a lie,” he said.

“All the years of repressed fear around being gay alongside a deep sense of guilt and responsibility for what happened in Kenya flooded over me.”

Mr Gildea said that the death of a colleague in Kenya in 1997 had resulted in his long-term depression.

In the immediate aftermath of receiving the email, Mr Gildea felt that he had no choice but to drop out of the running as he was ‘both in shock and having a physical and mental breakdown’.

Despite the email, Mr Gildea, who is Director of Operations and Corporate Services at the Adoption Authority of Ireland, said that he does not think homophobia is widespread in Scouting in Ireland..

“I believe the overwhelming majority of people in Scouting are kind, decent people who believe in fairness, inclusivity and openness,” he said.

“There are clearly a small minority – a tiny minority – who do not.”

Mr Gildea said that he won’t run for Chief Scout in the near future but didn’t rule out running for the position at some stage.

6 Queer TV Favorites Returning This Fall

Get ready to clutch your pearls.

As a slew of new shows are scheduled to premiere in the coming months, we can’t help but hold onto our favorites—at least five of the best returning for this season. And it’s going to be one dramatic fall as Lee Daniels, Ryan Murphy and Pete Nowalk up the ante with their respective series (Empire, American Horror Story, and How to Get Away With Murder).
American Horror Story: Hotel
Ryan Murphy has done the impossible: made cable’s campiest show even gayer by adding Cheyenne Jackson, Matt Bomer, and “Monster” maven Lady Gaga to the cast of its fifth installment. Cancel that reservation at the Bates Motel—here’s your new haunt. (Premieres Oct. 7 at 10 P.M. ET on FX)
Empire
There’s no stopping Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson) or her flying shoes, but Lee Daniels is upping the ante in season two with a sleuth of guest stars. Andre Leon Talley, Chris Rock, Kelly Rowland, and Mariah Carey are all scheduled to make appearances. But nothing tops Marisa Tomei as a venture capitalist who loves hip-hop, fashion and beautiful women. (Premieres Sept 23 at 9 P.M. on Fox)
The Good Wife
Following a bumpy season six and the loss of Kalinda (Archie Panjabi), the legal procedural looks to woo us back with a hunky new addition (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Also joining the fray is a new campaign strategist (Margo Martindale) who will battle with Alan Cumming’s Eli Gold. (Premieres Oct. 4 at 9 P.M. on CBS)
How to Get Away With Murder
The Viola Davis-led ensemble is back for a second season and it’s going to be just as killer as the first—literally. A fresh murder and strained relationships has the cast, including Jack Falahee and Alfred Enoch, on edge with only a few people they can trust. (Premieres Sept. 24 at 10 P.M. ET on ABC)
Kingdom
While Nick Jonas downplays his gay icon status, there’s no denying he adds a punch of heat to the fighting drama. The new season will see Nick’s character continue to battle his demons as secrets come back to haunt him. (Premieres Oct. 14 at 9 P.M. ET on DirecTV)
Transparent
Making us wait the longest is the return of the Emmy-nominated series now at the center of the transgender zeitgeist. Creator Jill Soloway says the show will move past explaining the trans community to audiences as it dives deeper into each character’s experiences. (Premieres Dec. 4 on Amazon)

Joe McElderry responds to body shaming article in the most perfect way

Joe McElderry-1

“Just took my full figured little ass to the gym…”

Former X Factor winner and GT favourite Joe McElderry has hit-back at the Daily Mail over their rather unkind comments at his physical appearance. The article published yesterday by Mail Online describes McElderry as having a “fuller physique” since winning the X Factor in 2009.

“His face had also filled out more from his skinny, boyish days,” the article reads.
The comments come following his appearance on TV chat show Lorraine, to promote Tommy The Rock Opera; a new musical starring McElderry based on the music of The Who’s Tommy.

Joe McElderry - 2

Joe has since posted a topless photo on Instagram that’s layered with some serious levels of sass. And, well we totally love it. Joe shuts down anyone questioning his size using hashtags #dailymail #fail.
