American Chuck Feeney the key backer for gay marriage in Ireland

20/04/2015 By ACOMSDave Leave a Comment

""
Irish American philanthropist and billionaire Chuck Feeney is the key funder of themarriage equality drive in Ireland which will come to a head with a referendum on the right to marry for same sex couples on May 22.
Current polling points to a convincing victory for the same sex marriage side, but experts warn Irish referendums can be decided very late and voters swing wildly.
Feeney’s Atlantic Philanthropies have committed $475,000 to Marriage Equality Ltd the main group dealing specifically with the issue.
Feeney, the New Jersey-born billionaire, is giving away all of his money, an estimated $7.5 billion, through Atlantic.
A proud Irish American Feeney earmarked over $1 billion of that to be spent on educational, human rights and other projects in ireland. He also played a major role in bedding down the Irish peace process in Northern Ireland.
In addition to funding Marriage Equality, Atlantic has funded the main LGBT lobbying group, the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (GLEN), to the tune of $2.5 million over the past few years.
Atlantic and Feeney identified equality in marriage as one of the key human rights issue they wished to focus on. Their funding helped pass the civil partnership act of 2010. On its website and in a video Atlantic cites other major advances including:
– Secured public referendum on civil marriage, which is scheduled for 2015
– Government creation of a Gender Recognition Advisory Group, the role of which is to make recommendations on how to proceed toward legal frameworks for gender recognition for transgender people
– Secured numerous significant changes in public policy and services to better reflect the needs of LGBT people in areas such as mental healthcare provision and bullying in the education system
– Increased capacities of the LGBT sector

Feeney, 82, a New Jersey native now resident in California, made his money as co-founder of DFS, the largest duty free empire in the world
The working class Irish kid from Elizabeth, NJ has surpassed the Rockefellers and Andrew Carnegie when it comes to charitable giving.
He invented “giving while living,” which is now all the rage. His example directly inspired Bill Gates and Warren Buffett to give it all away too.
One of his most important legacies is that he has convinced so many powerful people there are “no pockets in a shroud” and helping in the here and now is preferable to dribs and drabs over decades.
“Chuck has been an inspiration to both of us for many years and was living the Giving Pledge long before we launched this project,” Bill and Melinda Gates said recently.
“He’s a true innovator and example to anyone who seeks to make the world a better place,” Buffett said.

TV’s Power to Change Lives

Empire Jamal Jussie Smollett

Nearly every current popular television show at the moment was created, directed, written, or produced by a gay person. Does that translate into greater understanding and acceptance?

LGBT-inclusive shows have been trending for years, but that two of the season’s biggest hits—Empire and How to Get Away with Murder—featured gay characters in sexual scenarios on Fox and ABC has defied typical ratings logic.
The former, created by award-winning director Lee Daniels (alongside straight writer Danny Strong), channels Daniels’s childhood experiences with homophobia in the African-American community into a melodrama about gay R&B star-in-training Jamal Lyon as he fights his family for power while looking for love.Daniels told Out that working on the show has also already changed mega-producer Timbaland’s “opinion on how he feels about gays.”
“He really had this epiphany,” Daniels said. “It was beautiful, and it deepened our friendship.”
Murder comes from Shonda Rhimes’s protégé Pete Nowalk, who made headlines by having gay character Connor rim a man in the pilot. “Putting out the character on network TV, especially someone who’s young and confident, is very important to me,” Nowalk explains. As for the racy sex, Nowalk says the scene made it into the story because it shows part of who Connor is. “He’s sexual, and he can use that to his benefit, but it’s also just one of the ways that he lives and feels good.”
For years, gay men and women toiled in the shadows of Hollywood, crafting funny and heartbreaking narratives for mainstream America. Alan Ball (Six Feet Under), Darren Star (Sex and the City), and Marc Cherry (Desperate Housewives) were among those who ruled the airwaves in the late ’90s and early aughts, but with content focused largely on women and families. Now, similar creatives are openly discussing their personal lives and translating them into stories for the rest of the world. American Horror Story was created by Power List regular Ryan Murphy, whose groundbreaking Glee ended this year. Arrow and its hit spin-off, The Flash (with a gay villain played by openly gay actor Andy Mientus), have Greg Berlanti at the helm. Brad Bredeweg and Peter Paige, along with executive producers Greg Gugliotta and Joanna Johnson, have made The Fosters a mainstay. And when it comes to HBO’s The Comeback and Looking, there’s practically a gay man at every level of production, including Dan Bucatinsky, Michael Lannan, and Andrew Haigh.
Considering that Berlanti had to threaten to quit his job to get the first gay prime-time kiss on Dawson’s Creek just 15 years ago, TV has come a long way in terms of the real, open, sexual, complicated (and sometimes boring) LGBT characters now found on nearly every network, as well as the streaming sites Netflix and Amazon.Berlanti has made it a point to include gay characters in everything he’s done and has seen a cultural evolution. “It’s rewarding when you talk to younger writers and directors who say that they saw something that you did and that it had an impact on them,” he explains. “I like to think I’ve played a small, small part in some of that.”

Conversion Therapy Put Forward Again!

19/04/2015 By ACOMSDave Leave a Comment

Editorial:  The elections are here, and as I have written before, you need to be careful for whom you vote.  Mr Dodds, a right-wing Democratic Unionist Party of Northern Ireland politician, has not denied that on a Newsnight debate that his party would want a coalition to “reject gay rights”.  Other parties also have agendas regarding the LGBT community – find out what they are before you vote.

Militant Christian preachers want to ‘cure’ Britain’s gay people with controversial conversion therapy

Homophobic: Dr Robert Gagnon and John Nightingale support conversion therapy

Hardline Christian counsellors say they aim to “cure” Britain’s gays – despite experts branding their treatments potentially harmful.
Our reporter attended a shocking conference on “anti-gay” therapy in Central London this week.
Delegates paid £20 to hear a series of homophobic talks by professionally accredited therapists from several Christian groups.
One likened homosexuality to incest, while another put it in the same bracket as paedophilia.
They told the audience Britain is “in need of redemption” and would be condemned to hell if it failed to stop the rising gay population.

Shocking: The conference was held at the Emmanuel Centre in London
One Christian counsellor, Dr Robert Gagnon, said: “What we are encountering in society now is nothing less than totalitarian thuggery under the guise of love.”
Two of the organisations – The Core Issues Trust and Christian Concern – are registered charities, giving them tax breaks despite their controversial views.
In January, 14 organisations including the British Psychological Society and the NHS endorsed the Government’s memorandum of understanding on conversion therapy.
It said the practice was potentially “damaging” and agreed not to refer people conflicted about their sexuality for “gay cures”.
The Association of Christian Counsellors also signed up.
But at the conference, named Transformation Potential, the association’s John Nightingale revealed his organisation and sister groups still supported the practice.
Speaking at the Emmanuel Centre in Westminster, he said the restrictions had put them on a “knife edge” but they would continue regardless, renouncing their accreditation if necessary.
Mike Davidson

Scandal: Mike Davidson wanted to advertise his conversion services on London buses

He said: “If it tightened up any more, I have a pretty sure understanding that as an organisation we would step out and become one of the non-registered counselling organisations.
“It might affect my standing in the family of counsellors but I’m happy to make that choice.”
Mike Davidson, of the Core Issues Trust, made headlines in 2013 after trying to advertise his conversion services on London buses.
He and others speaking at the conference rejected any genetic cause of homosexuality and linked it to “trauma” such as sexual abuse, bad father-son relationships, or a lack of masculinity.
Dr Davidson said: “Therapists get to do it regularly for people with adulterous desires or pornographic addiction or paedophilia.
“So is so-called sexual orientation some sacred turf that mustn’t be walked upon?”
James Holland, 47, went to the conference out of curiosity after a bad experience in the past.
He said: “I was alarmed by what I heard but I wasn’t surprised.”
James told how he had conversion counselling 20 years ago as he was unhappy about being gay.
He said: “We were told to be like a glass of water that you keep topping up with masculinity.”
Matt SprakeJames HollandCalls: James Holland who tried conversion counselling said such therapy should be banned
This included not crossing his legs as it was “feminine” and doing male activities like playing football.
He continued: “I was paired with a man in my church to have a healthy same-sex friendship with so I could top up my masculinity.

“I had a crush on my man and it produced so much stress in me I had a breakdown.”
James, of Walthamstow, sought non-Christian therapy and now accepts his homosexuality.
He added: “Gay conversion therapy needs to be banned.”
Last week, US President Barack Obama backed a campaign calling for a federal ban on the practice.

The Boys Of Bridgend Get Bigger & Better (NSFW)

19/04/2015 By ACOMSDave Leave a Comment

By The Gay UK, Apr 14 2015 11:15AM
Bridgend in South Wales seems to be enjoying a bit of a heatwave as I make my way to meet Russ Hughes, the photographer and creator of the Boys of Bridgend for a chat about the upcoming 2016 calendar. Well, it might not be a heatwave but it’s definitely warmer than usual for April and things are about to get a whole lot hotter as he’s promised to bring along one of this year’s new recruits for a chat. There are definitely worse ways to spend an afternoon.
Russ Hughes/Boys Of Bridgend

Russ Hughes/Boys Of Bridgend
I arrive to catch the tail end of an ongoing shoot, though I seem to have missed the opportunity for naked men with this one. It’s a young woman getting head shots for a portfolio, I’m informed. As she leaves, in walks Rhys, one of the calendars newest recruits who I can only describe as ‘traditionally beautiful’. Even fully dressed you can see that he is in splendid shape with his boyish good looks and cheeky smile. I’m impressed. If this is a taster of what is to come with the new calendar then pulses are set to race the world over.
We sit, drinks are poured and our chat begins. I’m interested to know how the Boys of Bridgend began. Unlike other calendars on the market, the guys who feature here aren’t part of a collective group or team and while some of them have known each other for a long time, the only solid connection that seems to bring them all together is that they all hail from this small Welsh town. So I begin by asking Russ how it all came to be.
“I’m asked on a regular basis to do charity work, be it donating shoots as prizes or shooting charity events, but I wanted to do something more to help, so one day I hit on the idea of a calendar and it all went from there. I’d never done anything like it before and I had no idea about the amount of work that it needed, but once I set my mind to it there was no stopping me. I just had to work out who to shoot, where to shoot, how to fund it and how to get it made on a tiny budget. I also set myself a timescale of 3 months to get it all done. Now that I know what I know, that seems insane, but I went into it a bit naïve and looking for a challenge and I definitely set myself one.”
The 2015 calendar went on to be a big success, selling in over 35 countries, so it seems that it was a challenge that he managed to overcome, but what about the process of making it. How did it get off the ground?
“I’d love to say that it was plain sailing but it seemed like we hit brick walls at every turn. On the day of the very first shoot the model text me to say he was pulling out. I think he’d spent too long overthinking it and had talked himself out of it by the time the shoot day came. We were already miles behind schedule and I was panicking like you wouldn’t believe. I text one of the other guys who finished work and drove over, so we at least got the shoot done, but we were still a guy short. By the time we had completed all 12 shoots we had lost a further 2 guys who then had to be replaced, and we were still behind schedule. Aside from the shoot problems, we also had trouble finding funding to even get it printed. Companies just weren’t interested. In the back of my mind I was worried that I would be left with hundreds of pictures but no calendar to put them in. I ended up paying over half of the printing costs myself just to make sure that it was made and nobody ended up disappointed.”
You’ve been teasing us on social media with snippets from this year’s calendar, which is very obviously different from what we’ve seen before, so what sparked the change?
“There’s a couple of reasons, really, but mostly because of how well the last calendar did. We always thought that we would sell a couple of copies locally, raise some money for the charity and that would be that, but it went down a storm and people were buying it from all over the world. It was obviously a winning formula so changing that this year is a bit of a risky move, but we don’t want to get complacent, either. We did it one way and it worked well, so now we want to test the water and give everyone something different. People who have already bought the calendar already have lots of black and white images of naked men in the Bridgend countryside, so if and when they decide to buy the new calendar we will be giving them something completely different for their money so it won’t seem like they’ve paid for the same thing twice. We’ve put out teasers on Facebook and Twitter which have had a really positive response, which is brilliant, but just like last year, you haven’t seen anything yet. The final calendar images are still under lock and key and have been seen by nobody.”
“Keeping things fresh and new is what we want to do, and we really have changed everything. The theme of the calendar is completely different, we’ve got a bunch of new guys and we’ve also changed the charity we will be supporting this year as well.”
Russ Hughes/Boys Of Bridgend

Money raised from the 2015 calendar went on to support the Everyman Appeal, which benefits men who suffer from testicular and prostate cancer, while money from the 2016 calendar will go towards the Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation. How did that partnership come about?
“The guys over at the StandUp Foundation have been amazing. Really, truly amazing. We have had such a great response from fans and we really want to be as interactive as possible, so when work started on the new calendar we put it to our supporters for them to suggest charities that they would like to see us donate to. The response was incredible and there were lots of worthwhile charities thrown into the mix, but the one that came up over and over was the StandUp Foundation, so it was a no brainer for us. We contacted them to explain who we are and what we do and within an hour they were on the phone to us to get it in place and they have been fantastic ever since. The work they do, especially within the LGBT community has been so brilliant and the fact that we can help them is amazing. It’s like we’ve come full circle. It’s no secret that if it weren’t for the LGBT community the first calendar would have been nowhere near the success that it was. They really took us to their hearts and gave us sales all over the world. I love the fact that we can now give back to them in some way by supporting a charity that does so much work, both here in the UK and elsewhere in the world, to tackle homophobia. If we can make one persons’ life a little easier through sales of this calendar then we will have done something worthwhile.”
“It really is an amazing charity,” adds Rhys. “I do a lot of charity work but I’m especially proud to be supporting the StandUp Foundation. What this charity is striving to achieve and already have achieved is a massive boost for not just the youth but people of all ages. No-one should have to grow up being bullied or feeling ashamed. It’s bad enough to witness it let alone being the one on the receiving end of it, so the message the charity is sending out is such an important one. We all need to stand up and hopefully we can encourage more people to acknowledge what is going on and do more to help stop it.”
And it was just those sort of prejudices that put another spanner in the works for the boys this year which could have seen them have to cancel the 2016 calendar altogether.
“Yeah, it was a really sh**y time, actually. After the success of the last calendar we had companies actually approaching us wanting to help fund the next one, which was a big relief for us. When I had a meeting with them to discuss the new theme and charity our biggest sponsor decided to pull out. He didn’t want his company to be seen to be supporting LGBT causes as he thought the association would be detrimental, and so that was that. We didn’t try to persuade him as that’s not the kind of attitude that we want to be associated with, either, so we were happy to part ways but it left us with a big hole to cover our printing costs. We decided to dip our toe into Crowdfunding to see if that would help and luckily we have ourselves some amazing supporters because we hit our target in 8 days. How amazing is that? All our former sponsor did was confirm the fact that we were supporting the right charity this year, and once again the LGTB community came through for us when we really needed it.”
I was keen to know how Rhys, a 24 year old support worker, found himself signing up to appear in the latest calendar. Was there any sort of audition process or did you manage to just win them over with your looks? (Cue lots of blushing)
“I’ll have to leave all the ladies and gentlemen decide about my looks I think. I just saw an advert that was posted way back in January to say they were looking for guys for the new calendar so I thought I would give it a go and sent over some pictures. They asked some questions about me, I think to make sure I would be comfortable getting my kit off, and about my job and age, stuff like that, and then it all sort of went from there. It all happened pretty quickly, really. I’ve done a lot of charity work in the past, though nothing like this, but I am up for anything so I figured I’d give it a go and it’s been great.”
Russ Hughes/Boys Of Bridgend

Russ Hughes/Boys Of Bridgend
And what about the shoot? You didn’t have to get naked in the great outdoors like last year’s recruits, but how did you find the overall process of it?
“It was actually a really great experience, to be honest. Shooting with the props was really funny. That was probably my favourite part of the shoot because we had a good laugh doing it. Russ helped me to settle in really quickly and we just got in with it. I wasn’t nervous or shy but I wasn’t sure how I would take to doing the poses. When you see photo shoots they always look great but you never realise how awkward it can feel because it’s not something you naturally do, but Russ was happy with what we got so I left feeling confident that it went well.”
All of the guys from this year are being kept firmly under wraps, so has it been difficult to keep the secret about what you’re doing? Does anyone know?
“I checked with Russ and then told my parents, brother and my partner. I think I will probably get a bit of a ribbing from the boys I play football with when they find out, especially when they see some of the shots we took, but they will know it’s for a good cause so it will all be in good fun. My family thought it was hilarious but they’re really proud of me for doing it.”
So what’s next then? Calendar buying time is still a few months away but you’re all still hard at work. What can we expect to see from you over the coming months?
“We don’t want to take anyone or anything for granted. We’re trying really hard to be as interactive as possible and get amongst our followers and supporters, so we’re on Twitter and Facebook every day chatting with people and keeping everyone up to date. It’s important to us that we build connections with people rather than disappear for eight months of the year and then come begging when we have something to sell. We want to be approachable and friendly and not just be salesmen. We’re constantly thinking up ways to bring content to people and we release new teaser images all the time to show people what we’re doing. We’re hoping to be able to get out on the road this summer and go to some local Pride’s so if anyone wants to see us, get in touch. We’ve got a big reveal coming shortly where everyone will finally get to see all the guys from the new calendar for the first time and loads more merchandise coming out as well so if the calendar isn’t enough, you’ll soon be able to buy clothes, keyrings, mugs and loads of other stuff, with money from all sales going to the charity. We’ve also been working on video content, some of which you can see already on YouTube, with more to be released throughout the year. It’s going to be a busy few months. Bigger and Better. That’s what we keep telling everyone.

Irish Gay Marriage Vote: Bring Your Family With You

19/04/2015 By ACOMSDave 1 Comment

By The Gay UK, Apr 18 2015 06:47PM
A recent poll in Ireland found that 76% of adults believe that that same–sex couples should have a right to marry, now they just have to get them to the Polling Stations on May 22 to vote YES on the national referendum o marriage equality.
YouTube

YouTube
The Irish LGBT advocacy group BeLonG To Youth Services has produced a touching ad to make sure people get out and vote … We defy anyone to watch this and not start to get watery eyes.
If the referendum passes, (or hopefully ‘when’) the following line will be added to the country’s constitution: “Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex.”
Share this video with anyone you know who may know an Irish voter.

Ansel Elgort, Laura Benanti And More Sound Off On LGBT Rights At Broadway’s ‘Finding Neverland’ Premiere

https://youtu.be/XDqR2ZgwAZoAnsel Elgort, Laura Benanti and Bryan Cranston were among the many celebrities who spoke out in defense of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community on the red carpet at the premiere at the new Broadway musical, “Finding Neverland.”
“I don’t understand why every person shouldn’t have the rights of any other person,” Cranston, who appeared on Broadway last season in “All The Way,” told GLAAD’s Claire Pires. “All the way down the line, I’ve been a big supporter of gay rights forever, and I think it’s absurd that there’s still an issue about marriage.”
Elgort, who has also been an outspoken LGBT rights advocate, echoed those sentiments.
“I don’t see any reason people shouldn’t be allowed to be who they want to be,” Elgort said. “I almost find now, if you aren’t accepting, it’s a big problem … I really hope in my heart that the world can accept, truly and deeply, so that way there can be a true change in the way the world is.”
Benanti, who noted that her uncle was gay, added, “He taught me from a very young age that love is love, and whoever you love is who you love, and that’s that.”

Overtones Take Over ITV With Sweet Soul Music

18/04/2015 By ACOMSDave Leave a Comment

By The Gay UK, Apr 17 2015 10:29AM
Dapper Overtones are taking over ITV as they promo their new album Sweet Soul Music.
The supergroup, of which 3 are of the man loving variety, are due to sing on This Morning. In a recent interview with TheGayUK, the boys undertook a How Gay Is interview where we revealed that Lachie, would love to be Belle from Beauty And Beast, as he loves dancing with big hairy men. (Don’t we all)
We also found out that Timmy, the band’s loveable lead singer, doesn’t think Katie Hopkins is a gay icon.
The fivesome recorded River Deep Mountain High with X Factor winner Sam Bailey, talking about the recording Darren Everest from Essex said, “She’s cool man, she’s a really cool girl. Really down to earth, loves a chat… We just sat there for two hours and we’re like, ‘we should probably do some singing now…’ It was really cool to see her and Lachie go in, they had a mic each when they were doing their leads. It was like one big sing off. It was really cool. She was heavily pregnant and we were a bit like, as she was hitting them high notes, ‘I hope she doesn’t pop…'”

Mortal Kombat Series Introduces First Gay Character, Kung Jin

18/04/2015 By ACOMSDave Leave a Comment

For the first time, players of the massively popular Mortal Kombat series have the option to play as a gay character in the franchise’s latest installment, “Mortal Kombat X.”
Kotaku reports that Kung Jin, a former thief turned Shaolin monk, hints at his sexuality in a flashback scene where Jin is pressed to join the Shaolin monks. Jin reportedly says, “I can’t… They won’t accept,” with another character responding, “They care about only what is in your heart; not whom your heart desires.”
Check the scene out in the clip above.
Dominic Cianciolo, cinematic director of NetherRealm Studios, the production team behind the Mortal Kombat series, later seemed to confirm the speculation surrounding Jin’s sexuality in a tweet to a fan.

Long says party not going to Westminster with ‘a gun or a begging bowl’

The Alliance Party will not go to Westminster with a gun or a begging bowl, its only outgoing MP has claimed.
Naomi Long said if the party were successful in next month’s general election, it would take real “plans” for reform in Northern Ireland.
She said: “We are not going to Westminster to hold a gun to people’s heads and threaten chaos if we don’t get our way.
“Neither are we going to Westminster with a begging bowl constantly asking for more.
“We are going to Westminster with plans for reform to change Northern Ireland.”
Ms Long was speaking at the Alliance Party’s manifesto launch in the Metropolitan Arts Centre (Mac) in Belfast city centre yesterday.
The Alliance Party deputy leader is facing one of the toughest electoral battles against the agreed unionist candidate – Gavin Robinson of the DUP – for East Belfast. In 2010, she produced one the biggest shocks of the campaign, ousting long-standing DUP leader and First Minister Peter Robinson.
The Alliance manifesto includes a pledge to reduce or abolish air passenger duty to improve air connectivity between Northern Ireland, the UK and the rest of Europe.
It also promises to improve the rights of the LGBT community and aims to bring the region into line with the rest of the UK by lifting the ban on gay and unmarried couples adopting and the ban on gay men donating blood.
There is further support for a “mansion tax”, provided a mechanism is developed which would allow the asset-rich but cash-poor to defer payment.
Ms Long said the 32-page document would not be allowed to gather dust or be discarded in a recycling bin but would be used to guide politicians for crucial votes. “It will be, as our last one was, a living, breathing, working document that will guide how we deliver on that vision of the way forward,” she added.
In the event of a hung parliament, the Alliance Party would be guided by policy and values, Ms Long said.
The Alliance Party is fielding candidates in all 18 constituencies.
Leader David Ford said he did not expect success in all constituencies but said the party was compelled to offer voters a choice.
“Of course it is the case that we are not expecting to win in a number of those constituencies,” he said.
“We are merely putting our view forward.”
