SUMMARY:LGBTQ Online Book Club: Brendan Behan's Borstal Boy
DESCRIPTION:About Borstal Boy\nFrom Wikipedia: \n \nBorstal Boy is a 1958 autobiographical book by Brendan Behan. The story depicts a young\, fervently idealistic Behan\, who loses his naïveté over the three years of his sentence to a juvenile borstal\, softening his radical Irish republican stance and warming to his British fellow prisoners.[1] From a technical standpoint\, the novel is chiefly notable for the art with which it captures the lively dialogue of the Borstal inmates\, with a variety of the many subtly distinctive accents of Britain and Ireland intact on the page. Ultimately\, Behan demonstrated by his skillful dialogue that working class Irish Catholics and English Protestants actually had more in common with one another through class than they had supposed\, and that alleged barriers of religion and ethnicity were merely superficial and imposed by a fearful middle class. \nThe book is available from all good and bad booksellers\, on Kindle and audiobook. There are also lots of very affordable pre-owned copies on eBay. \nWe’d love for you to join us for our very first book club evening! \nThe book club will take place online and tickets for the event are free. \nAs always\, we strive to ensure that our events are a safe space for our LGBTQ community and friends. To do this\, we ask that you register for the event beforehand. You can read our privacy policy here. \nYou can book your place at the event here or in the Eventbrite widget below. \nThe link will go live at 1855 on November 19th and our moderator will allow you enter the Zoom meeting. SUMMARY:Queer Narratives: Lived Experience\, Activism & Change in Northern Ireland
DESCRIPTION:PERFORMANCE AREA | £6.50 / £5.00 (MEMBERS)\nQUEER NARRATIVES: LIVED EXPERIENCE\, ACTIVISM & CHANGE IN NORTHERN IRELAND – To mark Belfast Pride\, we have invited artists and activists from the LGBTQ+ community to explore The Linen Hall’s LGBTQ+ archives. Hilary McCollum\, Amanda Verlaque\, Heather Fleming\, and Mícheál McCann will choose an item from the archive – an artefact\, a newspaper article\, or a letter – to talk about their own lived experience and the history of gay rights in Northern Ireland. \nPANELLISTS\nHilary McCollum\nHilary McCollum is an Irish writer and feminist activist with a long-standing interest in creative responses to trauma. She has explored issues related to violence against women and girls through narrative non-fiction\, fiction\, and drama. Her writing often focuses on women’s resistance to abuse and oppression. Her first novel\, Golddigger\, won the Golden Crown Literary Society prize for historical fiction in 2016. She has a PhD in Creative Writing from QUB and is a Senior Policy and Liaison Officer for Northern Ireland with the Society of Authors.\n \nAmanda Verlaque\nAmanda Verlaque writes for stage\, screen\, and VR. The Lyric produced This Sh*t Happens All the Time\, her critically acclaimed play about homophobia\, misogyny and coercive control. The MAC produced her critically acclaimed debut play Distortion\, a satire about political hypocrisy\, homophobia and PR spin. Amanda adapted and wrote the pilot for An Irish Country Doctor based on Patrick Taylor’s award-winning novel and she made her directorial debut with Egg\, her VR short film in collaboration with RETìníZE. One of the Irish Theatre Institute’s Six in The Attic artists for 2022/23\, she is also under commission to the National Theatre (GB) and the Abbey. Amanda worked in TV drama for 25 years as a script editor\, storyliner\, producer and executive producer before starting her writing career. \nHeather Fleming\nHeather Fleming came out\, when she was seventeen\, in rural Co Down in 1977. She moved to Belfast\, became involved in LGBTQ+ activism; joining NIGRA\, volunteering for CaraFriend /Lesbian Line and founding Lavender Lynx (a safe space for lesbians\, especially those just coming out). Heather is a visual artist and has exhibited widely throughout Ireland and internationally. Creative writing was confined to her sketchbooks but in the last few years\, it has become more public. A number of her “Ten X 9” stories were broadcast on BBC Radio Ulster’s Tall Tales. A recording of one of her stories about being lesbian in NI is now part of the Irish Studies curriculum at the prestigious Swarthmore University in Philadelphia. In 2023\, two of her poems were ‘Highly Commended’ for the CAP/Executive Office Good Relations Award and she had a poem printed in the Seamus Heaney Award for New Writing Anthology. \nMícheál McCann\n \nMícheál McCann is a poet from Derry. His poems have appeared in The Poetry Review\, The Stinging Fly and Poetry Ireland Review\, and anthologised in Queering the Green and Romance Options: Love Poems for Today. He has published pamphlets of poems\, most recently Waking Light (Skein Press) and Keeper (14publishing). He was a co-editor of Hold Open the Door (UCD Press)\, Trumpet (Poetry Ireland) and is a founder and editor of Outburst Arts’ catflap magazine. He lives in Belfast where he is completing a PhD in the Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry.

SUMMARY:Mad About The Boy - The Noël Coward Story
DESCRIPTION:Noël Coward grew up in poverty and left school when he was only nine years old. He was queer in a very straight world. And yet by the age of 30\, he was the highest-paid writer in the world and a star on the Broadway stage. \n  \n\nHe wrote\, directed and acted in some of the finest plays and movies of all time\, including Private Lives\, Blithe Spirit\, Brief Encounter and In Which We Serve. He also became a world-renowned songwriter and performer of whom Frank Sinatra said\, ‘If you want to hear how a song should be sung\, go see Mr Noel Coward’. And if that wasn’t enough\, he was also a spy during the Second World War! \nAgainst all odds\, Noël Coward became the most successful multi-talented artist of the Twentieth Century. He defined an era and led an extraordinary life. This is his inspirational story told in his own words and music\, and unique home movies. \nThe film features Laurence Olivier\, Maggie Smith\, Harold Pinter\, Frank Sinatra\, Lauren Bacall\, Michael Caine and Lucille Ball\, and includes Rupert Everett as the voice of Noël Coward and narration by Alan Cumming. \n“Elegantly chronicles its subject’s journey from childhood in lower middle-class London to global stardom” ★★★★ – Total Film

SUMMARY:Dara McGrath's latest book 'Project Cleansweep'
DESCRIPTION:“Project Cleansweep takes its name from a Ministry of Defence report issued in 2011. The report assessed the risk of residual contamination at sites in the United Kingdom used in the manufacture\, storage\, and disposal of chemical and biological weapons from World War I to the present day. Over 4\,000 square kilometres of the landmass was appropriated for military use in the 20th century. Photographs of more than eighty sites take us to Dorset and Devon\, the Peak District\, the woodlands of Yorkshire\, and the countryside of the Salisbury Plain\, from the coastlines of East Anglia\, the West Counties and Wales to the remote Scottish Highlands and the Irish Sea. The pastoral myths of the bucolic British landscape – of simple nature\, a golden past – are disrupted by material realities embedded in the landscape itself.” \n  \nThe event will take place during Late Night Art\, which runs from 6pm-9pm.

SUMMARY:Street View: Matthew Finn
DESCRIPTION:Belfast Exposed is delighted to present Street View: Matthew Finn which features four projects – Mother\, Uncle\, Wife and Son – by artist Matthew Finn. Finn uses the people and events directly surrounding his life as visual references for projects that sometimes take years to realise. With no commercial constraints or deadlines\, Finn’s subjects are people that are important in his life. \nOver a thirty-year period\, from 1987 onwards\, Matthew Finn collaborated with his mother\, Jean\, to document her everyday life through a series of portraits taken in her home in Leeds. This series\, Mother\, is a record of the ordinary\, of a daily routine with which we are all familiar. It is also a record of the gradual shift from middle age to old age\, and\, in Jean’s case\, to the onset of mixed dementia and a move from the family home into residential care. \nFinn’s father never lived with him and his mother and many times he would make promises that he never kept. His mother would wait to be picked up for a night out with Finn’s Father. Finn can remember her standing there dressed in her fawn\, mohair coat\, and he wouldn’t turn up. Eventually\, she would retreat upstairs to take off her makeup and going-out clothes and return to the TV. This seemed to happen a lot. \nFinn’s father is not present in these photographs just as he wasn’t in their lives and yet he haunts these images. He was also the main reason that this project became so important to both Finn and his mother. \nMatthew Finn’s series Uncle follows a man through his journey around his home in a suburb of Leeds. The unremarkable story becomes poignant and remarkable through the time span of the collaboration as we follow Uncle Des from the age of 58 up to his death aged 84 in 2014. For over 25 years Finn followed his uncle documenting the everyday habits and quirks that we recognise in ourselves and how we utilise our space. Seeing Des struggle to understand a microwave\, choose between potted plants\, or being caught in the act during his annual task of cleaning the windows at Christmas\, offers the viewer a unique insight into how time is spent at home. Ultimately\, through these images\, we slowly follow Des into his final moments. \nFinn’s partner Martina was also happy to continue his obsession with photographing everybody in his life in his series entitled Wife. Relationships are about sharing and communicating. In this way\, this collaboration is not based on unconditional love but an equal voice between Finn and his wife. As a result\, this partnership is as much about Finn’s journey as it is Martina’s presence within the pictures. \nThe final work from Matthew Finn is entitled: Son. A person always there to be photographed. The ultimate expression of the photographer’s unique vision. A subject that never says no. But\, how to photograph a baby\, a young boy\, and then a child with independent thought? \nFinn started making pictures of his son Sebastian when was upset or unhappy but Finn soon realised that wasn’t who his son is. The photographs were not about Finn or his son. They were representations of a photographer weighed down by his own understanding of the visual histories of children in art photography. Finn had to learn that when your child says no it is sacred and should not be broken even for a photographic opportunity. \nStreet View \nStreet View provides a multimedia exhibition experience to increase the accessibility and visibility of photography on the streets of Belfast. Street View is a large digital window display\, complimented with audio narratives\, that showcases contemporary artwork by internationally renowned and local emerging photographers to an external audience on the streets of Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter. \nBelfast Exposed believe photography is for everyone\, it is accessible\, meaningful and has the ability to tell stories\, allowing us to create dialogue and reflect upon our history\, inform our present and inspire a positive future. Street View is another opportunity to extend our vision beyond the confines of the gallery. \n  \nLinks: \n  \n\nThe Art of Persuasion
